      About this Bergerac tour

Lascaux Cave, located outside of Dordogne in the Perigord region of France, is evidence that long before recorded history, there were artists. The series of circular caves there contain primitive drawings that date back more than 17,500 years to the paleolithic era. Discovered by two farm boys in 1940, the interlocking caves contain several series of drawings of animals, such as bulls, deer, cats and horses. They offer a fascinating glimpse into everyday pre-historic life.

This half-day tour takes you from the tourist center in Bergerac through the lush landscape of Perigord. Once at the cave site, you'll have approximately 50 minutes to explore the area, both on your own and on a guided tour inside the galleries.

The Lascaux site is very fragile due to its age and certain restrictions are in place to help preserve to cave’s artwork for future visitors. That includes restrictions on photography around the cave and no food and drink allowed inside the galleries.

Back in Bergerac, you'll have a chance to explore the many shops in the city center. Be advised; however, that most shops in Bergerac (and much of France) are closed on Sundays.

Cave Artwork – You’ve Never Seen Anything Like This

Though the site was just uncovered in the mid-20th-century, the influx of visitors and the unsealing of the cave's sealed environment has led to some damage to the Lascaux Cave artwork. Fortunately, scientists and art preservationists have taken steps to keep the cave art beautiful for future viewers. Reproductions of many of the drawings have been created nearby in the "Great Hall of the Bulls" so that visitors can see these incredible and historic painting without causing damage.
