About this Eidfjord Tour
You know that with the word "fjord" in its name, Eidfjord is going to be beautifully situated on the shore of one of Norway's natural treasures. And so it is, sitting on a branch of the Hardangerfjord, the fourth-longest fjord in the world. Your unparalleled sightseeing adventure of the Eidfjord area starts there.
Next, you'll make a short trip to the nearby village of Ovre Eidfjord, one of the gateways to the extensive Hardangervidda National Park. At the Hardangervidda Nature Center, enjoy an introduction to the region. Whet your appetite for the sights that await you as you watch Norwegian-Italian director Ivo Caprino's lyrical film, displayed in stunning panorama. You'll get a feel for the Hardangervidda plateau on this cinematic journey before you go see the real thing.
With anticipation mounting, get ready for the highlight of your tour: a view of Voringsfossen, one of the best known and most spectacular waterfalls in Norway. Plunging almost 650 feet into the valley of Mabodalen, Voringsfossen is sure to take your breath away. Perched above the waterfall on the top of the cliff that surrounds the waterfall, the Fossli Hotel has hosted many artists inspired by Voringsfossen's exquisite beauty. Edvard Grieg composed his "Norwegian Folk Songs" on a piano still present in the hotel. Let the splendor of Voringsfossen wash over you and see if you're inspired to song as well.
As you make your way back to Eidfjord at the conclusion of your tour, relax and lose yourself in the otherworldly scenery of southwestern Norway.
Too late to say sorry
A tombstone in the Old Eidfjord Church marks the final resting place Ragna Asolvsdotter, said to be the driving force behind the creation of the church in the early 14th century. Local legend holds that she contributed money to build the church to atone for her many sins. Worst one? Leaving her husband exposed on the fjord during low tide. When she came back for him, the waves had risen and consumed him. Who knows if building the church let Ragna rest in peace, but her tribute has survived the test of time.
