Immerse yourself in Norway's world-famous natural scenic beauty on this GoBe tour of the area around the Geirangerfjord, one of the deep natural inlets that crinkle Norway's coastline. Carved by glaciers eons ago, the Geirangerfjord is ten times as long as it is wide. Experience one of the top sites in Scandinavia and create unforgettable memories that will leave you pining for Norway's iconic fjords.
Begin and end your journey in the village of Geiranger, perched on the edge of the great fjord. Don't miss the quaint Geiranger Church, built in 1842. As you stand on the edge of the massive Geirangerfjord, you'll understand why Lonely Planet named Geiranger the best travel destination in Scandinavia.
The fjord itself is so huge and so stunningly beautiful that it has been listed, along with another nearby fjord, as part of a UNESCO World Heritage Site. You'll have the chance to see this natural wonder from two incredible vantage points high above the deep water. Ascend the mountain Dalsnibba and gaze upon the fjord landscape. Try to pick out the buildings of Geiranger hundreds of meters below. Then continue your adventure at the famous Flydalsjuvet Overlook, where you can test your bravery by standing on the edge of the sheer drop.
Finally, return to Geiranger and gain a deeper understanding of the fjord region's natural history and culture at the Norwegian Fjord Center. Before you leave the village, make sure you take a long look at the mountains and water that surround you. You'll definitely want these memories to last.
Fjord of Damocles
The Geirangerfjord is a source of stunning beauty to visitors and residents of Geiranger. But the breathtaking scenery that brings joy to so many could also bring devastation to the village. The mountain Akerneset towers above the fjord. There is a chance that the mountain could collapse or erode violently into the water, creating a massive tsunami that would flood Geiranger. Like the mythical sword poised above the head of the courtier Damocles, the mountain and fjord could turn into deadly weapons at any moment, a theme explored in the 2015 Norwegian film The Wave.
