About this Kristiansand tour
Experience the charm of Norway's fifth largest city on a leisurely and informative walking tour. As you stroll the streets, you'll become entranced with the rich history of Kristiansand that spans more than 370 years.
The tour starts with an outside visit to the Kilden Performing Arts Center. Crown Princess Mette-Marit of Norway laid the foundation stone in 2009 and the building was completed in 2012 at a cost of nearly 1.7 billion Norwegian krones. This impressive cultural space has a concert hall with 1,185 seats, a theater and opera hall with 708 seats, a multi-room with 234 seats, and an intimate hall with 150 seats. Acoustical consultants were used during construction to optimize the aural senses.
Your next adventure will be to the Christiansholm Fortress. Built to defend the city of Kristiansand, this fortress was finished in 1672. This fortress has only seen battle once, when it successfully defended Kristiansand against an English fleet in 1807, during the Napoleonic wars. The fort was decommissioned by royal decree in 1872 and is currently owned by the municipality and used for recreation and cultural events.
Another highlight you'll see is the Kristiansand Cathedral, which was designed by architect Henrik Thrap-Meyer. This neo-Gothic cathedral, completed in 1885, is the third cathedral built in the town of Kristiansand, and one of the largest cathedrals in Norway. It measures 230 feet long and 128 feet wide, with a single 230-foot tower. Near the cathedral you will visit Fiskebrygga, the Fish Wharf. This bustling marketplace has several restaurants and plenty of fresh seafood to savor as well as flowers and fresh farm produce in the summer. It all adds up to a charming time in Kristiansand.
In 1892, Kristiansand suffered a terrible fire. The only neighborhood that survived the fire is Posebyen, and it's idyllic. Wander its streets and see Northern Europe's largest collection of small and old-wood-construction houses. According to the Census of 1900, Posebyen was then home to 400 pigs, 178 cows, and countless chickens and horses.
Please exit the port terminal building or go to the end of the tender pier drop-off to meet your guide. Look for our displayed logo sign.
