      Private Walking Tour of Kristiansand

      Kristiansand, Norway
From (USD) $277 Per Person (Based on 2)
      • Private driver guide: You can't get more personal than this as you ride around in style and comfort and see the best of Kristiansand. Have questions? Your GoBe guide has the answers.
      • Vest-Agder Museum: This open-air museum was founded in 1903 and consists of a main building and 40 old buildings moved here from the nearby valley of Setesdal and Kristiansand's Old Street.
      • Kristiansand Cathedral: Norway's third-largest church, it was built in the late Gothic style and consecrated in 1885. It's a lovely stone building that reuses the walls of the previous cathedral, which burned down in 1880.
      About this Kristiansand tour

Founded in 1641, the rich history of Kristiansand spans more than 370 years. Norwegian King Christian IV established the town which is now Norway's fifth largest city. Explore the major highlights in and around the city by way of this incredible private bus tour.

Begin with a short coach drive outside the city to the Vest-Agder Museum where the history and traditions of Kristiansand comes alive in the form of original buildings. An open-air museum collective, it contains a main building that houses collections, plus 40 old buildings that date from the late 1500s to the 1890s. The buildings were moved from farms in the valley of Setesdal and from the city center of Kristiansand. They're arranged on site in a way that gives you a good sense for the past. Don't miss the refugee cabin that was used by resistance fighters who were hiding out from the Gestapo during World War II. The Vest-Agder is southern Norway's largest historical museum and it's a cultural gem.

Another highlight is a visit to the Kristiansand Cathedral in the city center. Designed by architect Henrik Thrap-Meyer whose other work includes Victoria Terrace in Oslo, it's built on the same site of two earlier cathedrals that unfortunately burned down. Clearly the third time's a charm. It's one of the largest in the country and serves as the seat of the Bishop of Agder and Telemark in the Church of Norway. Take in the peaceful surroundings, perhaps hear the beautiful organ being played, and reflect on the history of this sacred place.

      Kristiansand Cathedral is a survivor

Since its consecration in 1885, the Kristiansand Cathedral has suffered some structural damage but it stands firm (unlike its predecessors). Early in the morning of April 9, 1940, the city suffered an attack by the Nazis. The upper portion of the 230-foot-high cathedral tower was damaged when it was hit by an artillery shell. Today, the view from the spire is, well, inspiring.
