About this Oslo Tour
Embrace your cosmopolitan side as you explore Oslo on this GoBe tour of the city's highlights. The political center of Norway for over 1,000 years, Oslo has a lot to offer for lovers of history, architecture, art, and high living. Join the tour as you are exposed to the best of Norway's capital.
The grand 19th century architecture of Oslo is sure to captivate students of classic urban design. The Royal Palace, completed during the 1840s, is still the home of Norway's reigning monarch. The home of another branch of Norway's government, the parliament or Storting, is no less impressive. The Norwegian National Theatre stands between the parliament and the palace and has welcomed elite and commoners alike since its construction at the turn of the last century, rivalling the greatest theaters of Europe.
Relax with a scintillating walk through the Vigeland installation in Frogner Park. More than 200 sculptures by Gustav Vigeland beckon you into the world's largest sculpture park executed by a single artist. Vigeland, perhaps best known for designing the Nobel Peace Prize medal, created a fascinating landscape with his art before his death in 1943.
Finally, experience the spectrum of Norway's history with a visit to Holmenkollen, site of one of the country's most spectacular ski jumps, and a trip back into the Viking past at the Viking Ship Museum, where you can see excellent examples of 9th-century ships. Whatever floats your boat, Oslo has you covered!
Dead women tell no tales
Autumn, 834 AD. The winds of the Oslofjord chilled the onlookers as laborers closed the earth over a massive ship, the final resting place of two women. A mere 1,070 years later, the grave mound was opened and the Oseberg ship recovered, along with two female skeletons. Who were they? Some say one was Queen Asa, grandmother to the first king of Norway. Some say the remains are of a Viking priestess. Still others contend that the younger of the two women was a human sacrifice. Though the burial ship did not stay hidden, its secrets are still safe.
