About this Skjolden tour
This adventurous tour combines cycling and a short hike through the stunning Norwegian landscape. Take in the impressive scenery and history of the region. The most important industry of this area is agriculture. Try to see how many sheep you can count along your journey!
During your bike tour through Morkrid Valley, you'll make several stops where your guide will show you old photographs and tell you about the daily life in the valley. Find out about the moving of cattle and goats to spring and summer pastures, efficient use of land and animals, and the hard work that went into preparing for cold winters.
After your bike ride, take some time to rest in picturesque Hodnevollen. Here you'll enjoy traditional Norwegian food such as cured meat (or cheese) and flatbread, called lefse. To make lefse, you combine leftover potatoes, flour, butter, and milk. Special tools are used to prepare this treat, including long wooden turning sticks and deeply grooved rolling pins. Once the dough is prepped, it's cooked on a griddle. Delicious!
Your next adventure is a short mountain walk where you'll see rapids and a "giant's kettle" in the river. Also known as a "giant's cauldron" or "pothole," these holes occur because of eddying currents of water carrying stones. In Norway, these formations are called a jettegryte. Having seen the highlights of this beautiful valley, you will then cycle back to Skjolden.
Skjolden's good for the mind
Austrian-British philosopher Ludwig Wittgenstein, one of the most influential thinkers of the 20th century, lived in Skjolden from 1913 to 1914. Here he wrote Logik, the predecessor of one of his other works, Tractatus. He saw this as one of the most productive periods of his life. While living in Skjolden, he rented the second floor of a house where he could write peacefully.
Please exit the port terminal building or go to the end of the tender pier drop-off to meet your guide. Look for our displayed logo sign.
75% of the biking tour is on asphalt road, the last 25% - gravel. The terrain is mostly flat and the biking tempo will be adjusted so everybody can have a pleasant ride. The road in to the Merkid valley is a dead-end road with very little traffic.
All participants must be able to ride a bicycle: you will cover approximately 16 kilometers over fairly flat, but inclined, terrain.
