About this Stavanger tour
Stavanger is rich in heritage, triumphs, and heart. Norway's offshore oil boom contributed to this humming port city. In only a few hours, you'll drill down deep and yield its captivating, small-town character. Exploring the place where ancient Vikings fought and present king romps, you'll also reap the rewards of having an insightful, local buff by your side.
Glimpse Ledaal, a manor house built in 1799. The King of Norway still summers at this regal residence, and we'll furnish for you the latest gossip on his royal family. Up at Ullandhaug, reign over their spectacular domain atop Stavanger's highest point. Gaze in awe at splendid views of this entire destination, tucked within majestic fjords and mountains.
Snap pics in front of beautiful Stavanger Cathedral, the country's oldest. This medieval marvel's creation marked the city's founding in 1125. Built of stone, it sits proudly central and looks mostly the same as back then, an exception among Scandinavian equals that shed their original designs. The house of worship remains in continuous, prayerful use.
Wind through this old canning capital's cobblestone lanes. In Gamle Stavanger, wander a remarkably restored area populated by small, white, wooden cottages. Specifically, 173 buildings starting from the early 1700s, preserved as part of an award-winning pilot project in 1975. Enchanting and distinctive, this waterfront neighborhood truly reveals the enduring spirit of Norway and this particular city's exceptional way of life.
From warfare, a symbol of peace, unity, and freedom
Another point of interest? Sverd i fjell, or Swords in Rock. The three, 33-foot bronze swords pierce the rock of a small hill beside the fjord. This monument was sculpted by Fritz Roed in 1983, but honors a moment far older. On this spot in 872, Harald Fairhair won a brutal sea battle, uniting Norway under one crown and becoming its first king.
Please exit the port terminal building or go to the end of the tender pier drop-off to meet your guide. Look for our displayed logo sign.
