About this Stavanger tour
Trolls abound in this impressive landscape, and you're wise to heed the warnings to beware these fearsome mythological creatures. After all, they're practically the national mascot and you're venturing deep into their territory. Since at least the early 800s, Old Norse verses by skalds (poets) like Bragi Boddason proclaim isolated mountains, caves, and rocks as the trolls' lodgings of choice.
On this GoBe odyssey, along this lush, rural route, it's clear how these legends came to be. Try to catch a glimpse as you trek through dramatic natural surroundings. Spot the Gloppedalsura scree, the biggest Northern European boulder field. Local tales divulge that trolls dwell here. It makes sense, too. Some are literally as large as houses.
Nearby, at Byrkjedalstunet, step back in time and pursue further homegrown curiosities. This old cheese dairy, founded by native farmers in 1920, had raw materials supplied in spades by a vast goat population and exquisite natural surroundings. Now it's a beloved, mini version of Norway itself, carved into a mountain, hosted in a collection of historical and authentically reproduced buildings.
In the chandlery, browse candles produced the old-fashioned way. Perhaps try it yourself, by dipping or molding into forms. Splurge on eye-catching decor, stones and minerals, handcrafted wood, wool, fur, and leather goods, as well as artisanal treats. At the cafe, sample traditional recipes made from scratch with ingredients sourced from this very farm or its neighbors. A grassy hillside. Grazing goats. Splashy stream. A setting truly fit for a troll.
Or maybe a troll just threw a rockin' party?
If the geological side of these environs catch your fancy, be assured your GoBe guide will oblige by sharing secrets of how this countryside was created. The Gloppedalsura scree encompasses avalanche boulders piled atop an end moraine. Hear how 10,000 years ago, an ice sheet covering the area melted, breaking them free to tumble down the mountain. The more than 300-foot-thick scree you see is the settled debris.
Please exit the port terminal building or go to the end of the tender pier drop-off to meet your guide. Look for our displayed logo sign.
Byrkjedalstunet also has a candle factory. Here are Norwegian produced and handmade candles along with local art and interior goods.
