About This Lisbon Tour
Hundreds of years ago during the Age of Exploration, the Cabo da Roca was considered the threshold of a mysterious world: The vast blue of the Atlantic Ocean and the virgin land of North America beyond. Famous explorers like Vasco da Gama set out on epic journeys to explore these worlds, and the Sintra mountains were often their starting point.
Not much has changed in the last few centuries – there's still plenty of fantastic voyages taking place, but today they sometimes happen in a sturdy all-wheel drive vehicle with a professional driver navigating through the lush, wooded foothills of the Sintra mountains.
As you lurch over the rugged gravel paths, you'll get a glimpse of the craggy Guincho Beach, where wooden sailboats once prepared to embark on month or yearlong journeys. Today, the same strong winds that carried those boats across the North Atlantic make this curving beach with a massive sky one of the most popular for surfers and kite flyers in Portugal.
The Cabo da Roca Lighthouse is a fitting physical metaphor for what this place represents: adventure. The white and red beacon on a hill has been guiding ships and warning them of danger for over 200 years.
Standing on the western tip of Europe, looking out into the same blue sea stared at by legendary explorers from the pages of history, you'll get the same sense of awe and possibility that drove these pioneers of navigation to get in their sailboats and begin a new chapter of human history.
Though the region is known for its immense beauty, the Sintra-Cascais area is also the setting of several European myths. One involves the historic convent a few miles out of the town's center. Legend holds that a monk named Friar Honorio survived to be 100 years old by living out of a small hole near the convent – he moved there following a close encounter with the devil disguised as a beautiful woman asking for penance.
