Cascais and Sintra with Lunch
- Sintra: Discover the fairy-tale scenery and greenery, shops and market stalls, historic estates and mountain breezes that have attracted artists, writers, kings, and dreamers for centuries.
- National Palace: Two towering conical chimneys make this medieval landmark, first built for vacationing sultans in the Moorish era, a Sintra icon. Its lavish, whimsical interior amazes.
- Cascais: This royal resort is now a popular playground blending big waves, broad white beaches, shops of every style, lighthouses, a 17th-century Citadel, a yacht club, and fishing harbor.
About this Lisbon tour
Just west of Lisbon – out near where Europe's land ends – two picturesque showplaces capture the character of Portugal, each in its own way. This scenic guided drive makes its way past the sights of the capital and introduces you to Sintra and Cascais, then lets you loose to explore them.
A drive along the River Tagus and through the hills brings you to Sintra's town center, where the National Palace fills the skyline with its eccentric mix of Moorish, Gothic, and Manueline architecture. One thing's for sure: you would not want to be the one sweeping all those balconies or washing all those windows. Not that the neighbors' places are much easier; this town is pretty much one palace after another, marching up the forested hillside. But around the main square, normal non-monarchs can find much to relish: delish local pastries and hand-made crafts in the shops, narrow leafy streets that invite meandering, and abundant cafes.
Down at sea level, Cascais had more humble origins – as a simple fishing village – until it too got all high-society in the 1800s when King Fernando II proclaimed it his preferred retreat. Waves of Europe's who's who soon followed, followed by surfers just following waves to Guincho Beach. Yet Cascais' seafaring roots prevail – right down to the daily catch being auctioned off in the harbor, where colorful boats bob and their owners mend nets on the quay.
All in all, this is a tour that gives you the best of Portugal: the bustling capital and quiet bayside beach coves; gnarly surf spots and gleaming yachts; grizzled fishermen and urban sophisticates; Moorish castles, royal palaces, delightful cafes, and Europe's largest casino. Odds are that you'll find the end of Europe endlessly fascinating.
Tweeting in the Palace is discouraged
An active royal residence for ages, Sintra's sprawling National Palace has around a zillion rooms – some of which soar in flights of fancy. The Room of Swans radiates calm with an octagonal paneled ceiling adorned with graceful painted birds. But the Room of Magpies is decorated with birds famous for their ceaseless chattering – said to be King Joao I's unsubtle hint to 13th-century courtiers that gossipy whisperings were not welcome.
