Tuk-Tuk Through Lisbon with Ginja Tasting

      Lisbon, Portugal
      From (USD) $
      • Guided tuk-tuk tour: Be driven around town in the small, light auto rickshaw common in South Asia while you get acquainted with the historic churches, palaces, and homes of Lisbon's colorful neighborhoods and historic districts.
      • Graca Viewpoint: Drink in a dreamlike perspective that includes sweeping views of red rooftops, sprawling skies, and the crimson 25th of April Bridge, Europe's longest suspension bridge.
      • Ginja liqueur tasting: Try a traditional Portuguese drink made from berries (the "ginjas" floating in the bottle), salt, and sugar and served in a shot glass with a piece of fruit, often accompanied by chocolate or other sweets. Bottoms up!
      About This Lisbon Tour

The tuk-tuk is a three-wheeled vehicle usually seen for hire in Asian countries like India, Sri Lanka, and Thailand. It's certainly not native to Western Europe, which is part of what makes it so much fun to ride around the sightseeing stalwarts of one of the oldest cities on the continent. From the imposing Belem Tower, built to protect the city during the middle ages, to the stunning Gothic Jeronimos Monastery, you'll see much more of the capital city than you expected in just a few hours.

The comprehensive itinerary owes much to the nimble tuk-tuk. You'll cruise through the hilly, narrow streets with your guide at a pace still slow enough to absorb the history behind the landmarks. Thanks to its size, the tuk-tuk goes where passenger vehicles can't, including tight alleys, narrow side roads, and pedestrian plazas.

Unlike the tuk-tuk, Ginja is a native Lisbon creation. A fruity alcohol derived from the cherry family, this dessert drink has been served throughout Portugal for many centuries. It's ordered with or without fruit and paired with cheese, dark chocolate and other treats.

What it's not supposed to be paired with is driving – another advantage of taking a tuk-tuk.

      Berry tasty

While ginja (sometimes spelled ginjinha) may not be widely known throughout the world, in Portugal the drink is ubiquitous. In fact, it's so popular that a saying derived from its popularity has entered local lexicon: Sabe melhor que nem ginjas, which translates into "I think it tastes even better than ginja."
