Lisbon Walk & Drive with Funicular Ride and Fado Performance
- Gloria Funicular: Ride a city railway that has been shuttling Lisboans from downtown to the elevated Barrio Alto district since 1885; in 2002 it was declared a National Monument of Portugal.
- Sao Pedro de Alcantara Viewpoint: From this tranquil garden in the city's high-altitude district, you can enjoy sweeping views of the red rooftops of Lisbon's skyline, Sao Jorge Castle, and the deep blue Tagus River beyond.
- Fado in Chiado: This legendary venue specializes in performances of fado, a traditional Portuguese folk genre involving a singer and multiple classical guitarists playing bouncy, melodic songs that recount the struggle of society's lowest rung.
About This Lisbon Tour
In Portuguese, the fado means "fate." It's a fitting term to describe a mournful genre of music that touches on some of the roughest aspects of life. From lost love to death and every hardship in between, fado uses guitars and singing to express the pain wrought by fate's cruel twists.
This music is played across the country, but a unique style developed there in Lisbon – grittier and less upper crust. In a darkened theater, two guitarists begin by playing minor-key melodies that mingle with each other, setting the stage for the centerpiece of the performance: the vocalist.
Wearing a traditional outfit and often standing or sitting among props, the singer allows the true power of the music to come through. Not unlike American blues, the anguished wails and sustained vibrato of fado vocalists convey the problems of prostitutes, sailors, parents too poor to feed their children, and other troubled souls.
But there's another important element of every fado performance: Hope. While many consider it sad and mournful, most performers balance the melancholy with equal parts optimism. It's an upbeat reminder that no matter what the world throws at you, life, like this passionate, century-old genre of Iberian music, goes on.
The Queen of fado
Almost two decades after her death, Lisbon native Amalia Rodrigues is still considered fado's premier vocalist. Like many in her genre, her childhood was marked by hardship: She worked as a seamstress, clothes washer, and street vendor. But in the 1940s, Rodrigues began a meteoric rise that saw her become (and remain) Portugal's biggest-selling musical artist ever. She also popularized the dark clothes and shawls fado singers wearing today.
