About This Lisbon Tour
Lisbon's climate and strategic position at the western end of Europe has been tempting human settlers for 2,500 years and counting.
As is the story with so many historic European cities, civilization began in earnest here during the Roman Empire's heyday. Augustus built several baths, temples and a grand theater here in Olisipo, as it was known when it was a colony of Rome. The remains of these ancient public works can still be found in the historic museums that line the cobblestone streets of the city's oldest neighborhood.
After Rome, the city experienced a dark age until the 8th century, when the Moors took over and grew Lisbon into one of the most important cities of Europe. Much of the growth in Alfama took place during this time period; the evidence of Islamic influence on the city is obvious. The tan-brick city walls and turrets erected by the Moors are still remarkably well preserved in this neighborhood and once marked the boundaries of the entire city.
But the most obvious tell of the mixed heritage of Lisbon comes, fittingly, from one of its most prominent structures – the stoic Castle of Sao Jorge. It was the Moors who decided to place the castle in its elevated position, a strategic move meant to defend the city from attack. Most of its current design is the product of the 12th century Christian reconquest of the city, including the crenellated battlement and defensive moat.
After walking around its charming medieval streets, taking in its elegant and varied architecture, and admiring its picturesque views of the water, one thing is certain: Lisbon will likely be attracting people for the next 2,500 years as well.
Lisbon has been the setting for many historical myths, especially regarding its founding. One tale holds that Ulysses and his crew stopped here on the way back from the odyssey and found the riverside land so beautiful that they created a city. There was just one problem – a serpent goddess fell in love with Ulysses, who was eager to return home to Troy. When the famous Greek hero left town, the goddess was so angry that she thrashed her tail wildly, creating the hilly landscape that Lisbon is known for today.
