Funchal Wine Lodge by Coach, Foot, Cable Car and Toboggan
Funchal, Madeira, Portugal
- Funchal Market: Flower vendors in traditional Madeira garb greet you in the bustling, historic "Workers' Market" bursting with fruit, vegetables, seafood, herbs, spices, and crafts.
- Cable car to Monte: Climb 2,000 feet above Funchal on an exhilarating gondola lift to the Church of Our Lady of the Mountain and the Botanical Garden. Awesome views.
- Toboggan ride: The traditional way back down since 1850 – a wood and wicker sled steered through winding streets by white-uniformed drivers in straw hats. Crazy, but it works.
- Wine lodge: Taste Madeira's legendary fortified wines, and see where and how they're made in a time-honored process that imitates the effect of a lengthy sea voyage.
About this Funchal, Madeira tour
Parked in the Atlantic on an island 400 miles west of Morocco, the port town of Funchal takes your breath away at first view, and never stops.
Set in a natural amphitheater of lush mountains that climb 3,900 feet above the azure coast, it's a place of high cliffs, subtropical gardens, banana groves and grapevines terraced on steep hillsides. The cobbled streets of the town center are lined with well-preserved, centuries-old churches and classic whitewashed houses with red-tile roofs, overlooked by plush summer refuges high in the hills, where the coolest breezes blow. Fortunately, ingenious Madeirans long ago figured out how to take it all in: the cable car to Monte, where flabbergasting views force giddy giggles from even the most seasoned world travelers.
And what's fun going up is even more fun coming down: a wild toboggan ride down steeply- sloped streets to the village of Livramento. Never has so obvious a mode of transportation – Hey! Let's just slide down! – been so outlandishly enjoyable. And then, at last, sophisticated travelers can lose their goofy grins and act all worldly again. For the island of Madeira is, of course, the home of Madeira wines, and we're going to a winery that's been bottling some of the best since 1840. Here, among vats and casks of dry Sercials and rich Malmseys, you'll sample Madeiras that delighted even the cantankerous Winston Churchill. It's mature, grown-up fun; if you get giggly and giddy again, it's time to stop sampling.
Discovery is sweet, or dry
Like Post-It Notes, the microwave oven, saccharin, Teflon, and Velcro, Madeira wine was a happy accident: An overlooked lot of wine from the island made its way back from the New World aboard a hot, bouncy ship – and came back changed (in the most wonderful way). Ever since, Madeira winemakers have been using heat and controlled oxidation to transform their wines on purpose.
