      • Aveiro architecture: The city is home to varied and interesting works of architecture, including many Art Nouveau buildings. The old train station is especially worth a visit to see its facade covered in traditional Portuguese blue tiles.
      • Moliceiros: Aveiro is known as the Venice of Portugal because of its many canals. One of the traditional ways to travel is by boat on one of the moliceiros, originally used to harvest seaweed for fertilizer. Now they are a relaxing and entertaining way to see the sites.
      • Costa Nova: Check out the fun striped huts or simply stroll along the beach at Costa Nova (New Coast), just a brief trip from Aveiro. Enjoy sun, sand, and surf Portuguese style on this beautiful ocean beach.

Designed for couples, families, and even large groups to tour by private vehicle. Contact Hello@GoBe.com for available dates and pricing.

Looking for romance on your holiday in Portugal? Look no farther than Aveiro, known as the Venice of Portugal. On this GoBe tour, you'll get to enjoy a taste of Portuguese coastal living as you explore Aveiro and the nearby Costa Nova beaches. Don't forget to bring your camera…and your bare toes to wiggle in the sand!

Experience Aveiro during your guided tour of the charming city. Watch traditional moliceirosboats ply the lagoon in their quest for seaweed, used to fertilize local farmlands. Like the gondolas of Venice, the moliceirosare also a means of transportation for the locals of Aveiro and a sightseeing resource for visitors to the city. Admire the Art Nouveau architecture throughout town and check out the old train station, covered in beautiful blue tiles.

Continue your excursion with a trip to the beaches of Costa Nova. In addition to the sandy Atlantic Ocean beach, don't miss the candy-striped beach houses that cluster at the edge of the lagoon. These huts, originally used by fishermen to store their materials, make perfect vacation homes. Stroll the wooden path to get a view of the crashing waves or run down to the water for a wade.

Don't forget to save room for one (or more) ovos moles de Aveiro, the special local delicacy, one of Portugal's most identifiable desserts. Though their name means "soft eggs," these are sweet treats made of egg yolks and sugar that originated in Aveiro and have been granted protected status by the European Union. A sample of these "eggs" within your free time will round out your taste of Aveiro in the most satisfying way!

      Foiled plot

Tensions between some members of the Portuguese nobility and King Joseph I boiled over on a dark night in 1758 when the king's carriage was attacked by armed men. Though he was shot in the arm, the king survived and took revenge on his would-be killers, executing the Tavora family and their allies. The Duke of Aveiro, Jose de Mascarenhas, was implicated in the so-called Tavora affair and may have provided the intended murder weapon. Not only was he put to death, but his palace in Lisbon was also destroyed and the earth salted to prevent future growth. A happy ending for the king, but not so much for Jose de Mascarenhas!
