Braga Discovery Tour
- Braga Cathedral: This important church is home to the Diocese of Braga, which dates from the 3rd century AD. The building itself dates back to the 12th century and is just astounding.
- Braga Cathedral Museum: While visiting the cathedral, take some free time to explore the interesting artifacts in the museum, including the Manueline (late Gothic) chalice of Archbishop Diogo de Sousa that dates back to the early 16th century.
- Bom Jesus do Monte: "Good Jesus of the Mount" is an impressive sanctuary and pilgrimage site located on a hillside just outside of Braga. The zigzag Baroque stairway climbs 381 feet to the church (and many pilgrims ascend on their knees).
About This Oporto Tour
Take in the scenery as you drive through the beautiful Minho Province. Many parts of Portugal are famous for their wine production, and Minho, where Vinho Verde originated, is no exception. The literal translation is "green wine," but it is more widely known as "young wine" because it is typically consumed shortly after bottling. This light and refreshing wine is slightly sparkling and comes in red, white, and rose varieties.
One of the major cities of this region is the picturesque and religious city of Braga. On this GoBe tour you will have the chance to visit the incredible cathedral, founded in 1070. This massive building is notable for its Gothic and Renaissance architecture. Inside the cathedral, you will notice several elaborately decorated chapels. The Capela dos Reis was built in 1374 to house the tombs of Count Henrique and Countess Theresa, parents of the first Portuguese King.
During your visit here, be sure to browse the Cathedral Museum. This impressive preservation of history hosts five collections, including Treasure, Carving, Statuary, Azulejos, and Bells. The treasure collection has a plethora of precious items including 16th-century clothing. The carving collection boasts woodwork such as altars and musical instruments. The statuary collection includes different sculptures dating back to the 14th century. The Azulejos collection shows the intricacies of tin-glazed ceramic tile-work. Finally, the museum has a bell collection that is comprised of over 200 bells. Needless to say, you will have plenty of art, history, and music to enjoy while at the cathedral.
After some free time to stroll around, drive to picturesque Bom Jesus do Monte Sanctuary, a magnificent site with chapels, caves, ornaments, decorative furniture and beautiful gardens that harmoniously combines the work of nature and man. Pause for photos and admire the luxuriant green of the area.
Delicious Minho recipe
Caldo verde ("green broth") soup is said to originate in the Minho region. Ingredients include potatoes, kale, olive oil, salt, and slices of sausage. It's usually accompanied by Portuguese broa, a traditional cornbread, that's used for dipping. This dish is typically consumed during Portuguese celebrations like St. John's Day (June 24) that is widely celebrated in Braga and throughout Portugal. Some variations of this traditional recipe include garlic, onion, or ham hock. What a tasty feast day treat!
