About This Oporto Tour
What could be better than savoring the boozy embrace of a rich port wine against the backdrop of mountains and checkered fields that produced it? Join this GoBe tour for a journey of delicious discovery as we travel to the heart of Portugal's wine country, the Douro Valley. Get ready for sipping, tasting and sightseeing!
Port is wine fortified with stronger alcohol similar to brandy, giving it a pleasant burn and lingering sweetness. True port can legally only be produced in the Douro Valley region, the world's third-oldest protected wine region. Often imitated outside of Portugal, port gets its name from the historic town of Porto ("The Port), the point of departure for much of the Douro Valley's product.
On your wine experience, you'll get to experience the Douro region's hospitality at one of the scenic estate wineries in the valley. As you drive through the lush countryside, enjoy the spectacular mountainous terrain that gives the Douro Valley its unique wine-producing characteristics. Each new turn in the windy road will bring a new exquisite vista to your eye.
Enjoy some free time in the town of Amarante as well. Stroll along the Tamega River and check out its famous bridge, or visit the 16th-century Church of Saint Goncalo. Unwind and let yourself be enchanted by the warm and inviting culture of northern Portugal. It's hard not to relax after a day soaking up the sun and indulging in some of the world's finest fruits of the vine!
Care for some port, old chap?
Port has long been popular in England, even though the wine can only properly be produced in the Douro region of Portugal. How did the English develop their taste for sweet, strong, Portuguese wine? History has the answer. In 1703, England and France were at war (again). Deprived of their French wine, English merchants took advantage of a treaty allying their country with Portugal. As a result, port wine became an easy commodity to import. The fortified drink had the extra perk of staying fresher longer due to its high alcohol content, and England's relationship with port took off!
