      About This Oporto Tour

It's not every day that you get to visit the birthplace of a nation. Known as the "cradle of the Portuguese nationality," the town of Guimaraes precedes the foundation of Portugal. Many major political and military events here led to the independence and birth of a new nation in 1128. And it's still going strong today. In 2012, The New York Times considered Guimaraes a "must visit" destination and the European Union proclaimed it a European Capital of Culture.

Travel back in time as you visit the 15th-century Palace of the Dukes of Braganza. This impressive estate houses a museum and art gallery with portraits, tapestries, fine furniture, and porcelain. The museum collection aims to educate the public about its history during the 16th and 17th centuries. Included in the collection are the tapestries of Pastrana, which depict North African conquests, and a set of porcelains from the Portuguese East India Company. These precious artifacts are a few examples of the incredible collection that calls the palace home.

As you walk the town's center, delight in discovering peaceful corners, narrow streets, and a former manor house. Don't miss the incredibly old church situated in the main square. In the 10th century, Countess Mumadona Dias erected a monastery on her property known as Vimaranes, an area now known as "vila baixa" (downtown). At the same time, she ordered construction of a castle to defend the settlement, located in the area now known as "vila alta" (uptown). The monastery later became the "Real Colegiada" or Royal Collegiate Church. On your way back to your coach, take note of the words emblazoned on one of the towers of the city's old wall: "Aqui nasceu Portugal" ("Portugal was born here"). Viva Portugal!

      Bacon from heaven

For those of us with a sweet tooth, this Portuguese almond cake does not disappoint! Toucinho do Ceu is literally translated as "bacon from heaven" for two reasons. The first is because the recipe uses pork lard, and the second reason is that it is unbelievably delicious. The town of Guimaraes had a feminine monastery that had a major influence over the local gastronomy, and this delicious confection is a good example of their contribution.
