About This Oporto Tour
Oporto ("The Port") is the economic and cultural capital of Northern Portugal, a region famous for its port wine production and export. While walking around this bustling coastal city, you'll see a variety of architectural styles including Romanesque, Gothic, Baroque, and Neoclassical. One of the oldest European centers, Oporto's stunning architecture combines an incredible history with spectacular scenery along the Douro River. No wonder the historical core is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
One of the city's important historical sites is the Church of Saint Francis. You will instantly notice its Gothic architecture and elaborate rose window. On the inside the intricate Baroque decoration is sure to astound you.
In the heart of the city runs the Avenida dos Aliados, an exquisite boulevard lined with grand buildings and a central promenade. The town hall is located at the top of the avenue. Made of granite and marble, this building commands your attention. Note the bell tower that soars 230 feet high. Close by is the Cathedral, one of the city's oldest, and notable for its Romanesque architecture.
Another important cultural custom of this region is port wine. This traditionally sweet, red wine was given its name from this town, a major port from which the wine was shipped. Port wine is produced from grapes grown and processed in the Douro region. The addition of aguardente, a neutral grape spirit, stops the fermentation process, leaves residual sugar in the wine, and boosts the alcohol content, making this wine sweet and deliciously smooth. Just like your time in Oporto!
Do you know Saint Francis?
Born Giovanni de Pietro di Bernadone (try saying that five times fast), Saint Francis of Assisi was an Italian Roman Catholic friar. He is also one of the most venerated religious figures in history. He founded the men's Order of Friars Minor and the women's Order of Saint Clare, but most people associate him with the patronage of animals and the environment. On October 4th, his feast day, many Catholic and Anglican churches hold a "blessing of the animals" ceremony.
