Tuk-Tuk Motorized Taxi Tour of Porto
- Tuk-tuk: Invented in 1947 by the same guy who gave the world the Vespa, the tuk-tuk (as it's called in Thailand) has an open frame that rests on three wheels. Most of the tricycles on this tour have a maximum capacity of six.
- Clerigos Tower: Be sure to snap some photos when you stop by the tall bell tower of this Baroque church. The tower can be seen from different points throughout the city and is an iconic symbol of Porto.
- Monastery of Serra do Pilar: Take in the extraordinary views of the Douro River and city center of Porto from this picturesque historical site, one of Gaia's architectural landmarks.
- Scenic drive: Release your inner history buff as you experience a scenic and intimate drive passing through the oldest and historical quarters of Porto.
About This Porto Tour
Explore Portugal's second largest city on an electric tricycle! This unique tour leads you by Matosinhos seaside road where you'll take in panoramic views of the Douro River. As one of the oldest European cities, Porto's historic center was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1996. Throughout this tour you will experience the history, culture, traditions, and legacy of this incredible city.
Are you a wizard-loving muggle? If so, you're sure to get a kick out of your first stop at the Lello Bookshop. J.K. Rowling lived in Porto while teaching English in the early 1990s. Rumor has it that she frequented this bookstore and usually drank coffee on the second floor. Many Harry Potter fans will recognize some of the interior design that made it into the books and films. Don't miss the carved wooden staircase that's smack in the middle of the store.
This famous bookstore dates back to 1869 where it was originally established as the Livraria Internacional de Ernesto Chardron, known as Livraria Chardon to many locals. Lello is ranked as one of the world's top bookstores and is a Porto highlight. But look with your eyes and not with your camera. No flash photography is allowed inside as it poses a risk to some of the ancient books. Many visitors purchase photographs as a memento of their visit.
While driving through the historic center, look for the Clergios Tower, Sao Bento Train Station, and the cathedral. Then get ready to cross the Dom Luis I Bridge, a double-decker metal arch bridge that was, at one time, the longest of its type in the world. On the other side, you'll visit the beautiful Monastery of Serra do Pilar and many other exquisite sites. Back aboard your tuk-tuk, you'll return to Porto, passing by Bathalha Square, Santa Catarina Street, and the famous 1920s-era Majestic Cafe. Electrifying!
You're in port wine country
Produced in the Douro Valley region and given the name of the port from which it shipped (Porto, or "The Port), this fortified wine is typically a sweet, red dessert wine. Over 100 different kinds of grapes are certified to produce port wine, but only five varieties of grapes are widely cultivated and used. Portuguese grapes that are used in port wine production are regulated by the Instituto dos Vinhos do Douro e do Porto (Port and Douro Wines Institute). The Duoro region is the world's third-oldest protected wine region. Now that's vintage.
