About This Porto Tour
Imagine the excitement of setting out on a journey that will take you to the edges of the known world and introduce you to places, people, and things you could never have dreamed before. Join this GoBe tour to experience the thrills of the Age of Discovery at Porto's interactive World of Discoveries museum. Then tap into your inner explorer as you take a voyage down the Douro River.
Get ready to step back in time to an era when Portugal ruled the seas. Navigators and daring men spread across the globe in search of knowledge and adventure. Some have even journeyed to the 21st century to guide you through the World of Discoveries. Enjoy rooms designed to introduce you to the discoveries of the past and embark on a trip through the varied cultures the Portuguese came into contact with during their forays far from home.
Next up, explore a smaller but no less exciting swath of the world as you cruise the Douro River in a Rabelo boat, a traditional cargo boat that is unique to Porto. It was used for centuries to carry goods and people on the river. As the second-largest city in Portugal, Porto has much to offer. The historic center of town is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. See if you can spot architectural gems like the Gothic Monumental Church of St. Francis and the Dom Luis I Bridge, built in the 1880s by a colleague of Gustave Eiffel. The metal bridge shares many characteristics with Eiffel's famous Parisian tower. Sit back, relax, and enjoy your time on the water. This is Portugal at its finest!
What's in a name?
Porto, in addition to wielding a major influence on Portugal's history as the country's second-largest city, is named for its function as a port. This deceptively simple name has given rise to the English translation of Porto, which includes the Portuguese article "o" or "the." The name of the city was also appropriated for port wine, which is produced in the area and was traditionally exported from the port of Porto. In Roman times, Portus Cale was the settlement centered around modern day Portugal. From this settlement, the name of Portugal itself may have evolved. So much for a simple name!
