About this St. Petersburg tour
St. Isaac’s Square’s history began to transpire from the 1730s-1740s – a time when it was a designated trading zone. From salt-selling stalls to marina planning on the Moyka River, it soon transformed into a built-up area, with imposing buildings being erected some 20 years later. Approximately 100 consecutive years passed until construction was complete.
Following Catherine II’s demise in 1796, Mikhailovsky Castle became the point of transfer for the marble contained inside the square’s parochial building. Before one of the world’s tallest cathedrals was finalized in the 1870s, Auguste de Montferrand’s demands for reconstruction were met. Architectural differences began to crop up in the early 20th century.
St. Isaac’s Square may be prone to flooding, but the waters encircling Vasilievsky Island are enjoyed by more than 200,000 residents. Connected by Exchange Bridge, Blagoveshchensky Bridge, Palace Bridge and Tuchkov Bridge, the magnificent Rostral Columns and Old St. Petersburg Stock Exchange are major interest points. Capture panoramic images while strolling along pedestrian-only walkways before heading to the Church of the Savior on Spilled Blood.
Constructed on the spot where revolutionaries bombed Alexander II’s carriage in 1881, this church was built between 1883-1907. Funded by private donators and the Imperial family, its more than 80,000 square feet of detailed mosaics and articulate exterior design make this holy spot a prominent photo stop.
