It’s not every day that you will be invited to spend some time with a local family in Russia and feast on homemade treats, so why not take this opportunity to experience the hospitality of a generous and interesting family? While the customs and culture may differ to your own, you’ll be surprised at the many values that you have in common.

Vodka was first distilled in Russia way back in the 9th century, and now it is the country’s official alcoholic beverage. For this reason, you can expect to knock back a shot when you sit around the table with your hosts. Traditions in this country are all about sharing, so expect to be treated to pile-high feasts and bowls of borscht soup, followed by sweet desserts.

Having the chance to learn Russian traditions and the way that these people live their lives will be fascinating. It’s worth visiting a local museum first, to show that you possess some knowledge about the multinational country.

There are a few easy ways to please the locals, most of whom are very sociable. Bestow gifts or small offerings, talk openly about private issues and stick to your schedule. Generosity is valued greatly in this country, so although the host may decline an offer to help in cleaning up, asking will still be a friendly gesture.

      Eating Habits in Russia

If you tend to watch your weight or focus on portion sizes when eating meals, you may have to adjust your habits slightly when you join a Russian family for a meal. It is not uncommon for the local people to refill plates, even when you’ve already demolished what they dished up. Eating at least four times per day is typical of a Russian, and don’t be surprised if the host of the meal feeds you so much to the point that you are incapable of moving for a while.
