      About this St. Petersburg tour

One of Russia’s most popular cities, Veliky Novgorod is better known as Novgorod or Novgorod the Great. It boasts huge historic importance, and after the city of Kiev was completed, the region was considered the second main metro area. Ancient and beautiful, its location means that you will need to take a three-hour, approximate 125-mile drive southeast from St. Petersburg to Lake Ilmen.

You’ll have a blast taking in untouched countryside views on this road trip. An opportunity to witness forgotten corners, the scenery features wooden houses and older villages. The landscape won’t disappoint when you arrive in Novgorod. There, you’ll be greeted with a smile at a city hotel and a Russian pastry that will satisfy your sweet tooth, washed down with a hot tea or coffee.

With your tummy warmed, your Novgorod exploration will commence. In the heart of the city, sites you will see include the St. Sophia Cathedral (circa 1045), Mikhail Mikeshin’s masterpiece, The Millennium of Russia, timeworn mural paintings and various other iconic tributes to Russia’s culture.

The open-air museum, Vitoslavlitsy, and a cluster of architectural monuments dating back to the 12th and 16th centuries protrude from the banks of the Volkhov River, including Paraskeva-Pyatnitsa, the Cathedral of St. Nicholas, Saint George Cathedral and Yuriev Monastery.

One of the Most Contradictory & Turbulent Figures in Russian History

Quite a contradictory figure, Yuri Dolgoruky was Moscow’s founder. Following the attendance of a party inside a Kievan nobleman’s house in May 1157, Yuri died shortly after, with many people presuming that he was poisoned. Dolgoruky was the Prince of the Rurik Dynasty.
