About this St. Petersburg tour
A “nesting doll” is what some people may call a Matryoshka doll. Typically brought home from Russia as a souvenir, the story behind these dolls is not often known by tourists. Your experience in learning Russian folk art at a traditional workshop will bring you closer to the local people and teach you more about what is sometimes mistaken as a “toy.”
Its name derives from the female name Matryona, which is a common name among people living in the patchwork of villages throughout Russia. First made by Vasily Zvyozdochkin in 1880, the dolls were inspired by the design of folk crafts painter, Sergey Malyutin. Misconception surrounds the Matryoshka doll, with most people believing that they only represent the female figure. However, the figures (which range in size from large to small), can represent both genders.
Prior to the workshop kicking off, you will be transported to a souvenir salon. There you can closely inspect sets of wooden dolls before your creativity is unleashed. Under expert supervision, brushes and paints will be supplied for you to use at your very own workshop station. And of course, you get to select a doll from the souvenir station.
Youlia Bereznitskaia’s world record for creating a 51-piece set will be hard to beat, but if they stack, you’ve succeeded!
A Symbol of the Country and its Culture
Your participation in the Matryoshka painting class will be interesting, to say the least. While it may be considered a toy for a child, Matryoshka dolls are centuries old and are considerably iconic. Despite being the most popular souvenir associated with Russia, they actually originated in Japan. Inspired by Japanese Daruma dolls, the wood used to make Matryoshka dolls takes two years to cure before creation can begin.
