      About this St. Petersburg tour

Northwestern Russia would not be the same if the Neva River did not exist. Europe’s third-largest river, it is the only river that emanates from Lake Lagoda. An integral part of St. Petersburg, the waterfront and the iron bridges that tie the landscape together are a spectacle to be seen any time of the year.

The year 1936 was when the first concrete bridge was constructed there - Volodarsky Bridge. In addition to this bridge, Grenadiers Bridge, Exchange Bridge, Alexander Nevsky Bridge, Trinity Bridge, Volodarsky Bridge and Tuchkov Bridge, to name just a few, connect various parts of the city.

Several branches of the river form a delta, and it is this fact that makes the mesmerizing estuary so popular for vessels transporting cargo. The water is deep and there are minimal shoals along the 46-mile river, making the setting ideal for navigation. Most commonly, vessels can be seen transporting granite, timber, steel and cast iron.

As you cruise and watch the sky slowly turn into a light shade of crimson, highlighting St. Petersburg’s glittering backdrop, the red Rostral Columns on Vasilievsky Island will catch your eye. Urban development was initially considered by architects and it is clear how this was achieved in the construction of grandiose buildings, like the Winter Palace, Marble Palace and Grand Duke’s Palace.

      The Site of Many Battles

For centuries, the Neva River was of great strategic importance for transport. As a result, the Russians, Swedes, Finns, and Balts clashed on its banks. From the 8th-13th centuries, the Neva was part of the trade route from Scandinavia to Byzantium, the road "from the Varangians to the Greeks." In 1240, the Novgorod militia led by Prince Alexander Yaroslavich defeated the invading Swedish army on the banks of the Neva. Because of the victory, the prince was thereafter nicknamed Alexander Nevsky (of the Neva).
