Learn to Make Blini by Private Van and Guide

      St. Petersburg, Russia
      From (USD) $934 Per Vehicle
      • Prepare a Popular Russian Dish: Russia is home to many culinary delights, including blini. Cook your own and chow down on it with every filling imaginable.
      • Blinis: One of the most popular dishes in Russia. Blinis with caviar, jam, honey, marmalade, cheese, cabbage, mushrooms… Blinis are the main course but they can also be served as a dessert as well.
      About this St. Petersburg tour

They might look and taste like pancakes, but blini are somewhat different. Unique to the country’s culinary flair, they are one of the most popular dishes and are served at the majority of St. Petersburg’s restaurants and cafes. Grilled lightly on both sides, this treat is consumed widely during the Maslenitsa festival.

When you participate in the blini cooking session, a trained chef will instruct you on how to weigh and prepare ingredients, such as milk, baking soda, salt, flour and sugar. A symbolization of the sun, these circular buckwheat pancakes are a mouthwatering base for a canapé, whether it is smoked salmon or crème fraîche.

Pretty much every flavor and texture compliments blinis, and you can decide whether you want to make yours with honey, cheese, caviar, mushrooms, cabbage or marmalade. This will be a tester for your cooking skills, especially since you’ll be sipping on the country’s national drink – vodka! Blini can also be washed down well with champagne and chilled fruit juices.

Not only will Russians prepare blinis when they plan on kicking off a dinner party with friends or family, but also as a way of marking happy and sad occasions – to be more specific, for marking a person’s birth or death. A remembrance of the dead, it’s rare to see a funeral feast without blinis being served, and it is equally as rare for a Russian to be welcomed into the world without the accompaniment of this food.

Russian Food Traditions Dating Back to the 1200s

It’s not just blini that will have you licking your lips when visiting Russia, because the country’s food traditions are as diverse as the landscape. Most food traditions are still honored to this day, and from as far back as the 1200s, both peasants and the wealthy would try their hand at certain recipes. From refreshing okroshka that is typically served throughout the summer months to common breakfast bowls of Kasha porridge, Russian’s tend to eat four times a day! Their culture focuses on the importance of eating together, which you’ll discover at this cooking class.
