About this St. Petersburg tour
It was back in the 19th century that the idea came about for the St. Petersburg Metro system. Operating since November 1955, the underground railway system isn’t just any ordinary type of railroad transportation. Acknowledged as the 12th busiest metro system in the world, it comprises a total of 67 stations, of which 3,500 trains transit on a daily basis.
While the design of more modern metro stations throughout the country may be more functional, St. Petersburg’s Metro is decorated elegantly, even more so than older stations in Moscow. From glistening golden carvings to intricately painted mosaics, each station within the metro system boasts a different meaning for their elaborate beautification. The older stations are richly decorated with polished granite, marble of various colors, stainless steel, bronze, aluminum, synthetic materials, glass, various mosaics, bas-reliefs and sculptures. The new stations are mostly simple and modern in design, but not less impressive. Each station has its own unique design.
When you first enter the subway station, you will be taken aback by the breathtaking themes. Don’t be surprised to see lamps, chandeliers and eye-catching adornments on the station platforms. Get your camera out to snap the creativity that was poured into the design of the Metro, but don’t forget to explore the story-telling side of the Russian underground’s past.
More than 2.5 million passengers will take a seat or stand up on the trains that pass through the subterranean metro system each day. Concealed almost 280 feet below ground, the five subway lines were designed to a bomb-safe standard and the transportation system offers the easiest way of accessing city hotspots.
Prepare for the Most Exciting Journey of Your Life
