      • More than a guide: Even by GoBe standards, your tour leader is special. A local chef or food writer with serious creds, they're an instructor/lecturer – in Latin a "docent" – who's up to speed on Scottish culinary trends, traditions, and artisanal goings-on.
      • Undivided attention: With a maximum group size of six, you can engage directly with your docent and the shop owners you visit, get in-depth answers to your questions, even tweak the experience to match the group's keenest interests.
      • Stockbridge: Not far from the bustling city center, this bohemian district along the Water of Leith (that's what they call a river here) is an up and coming showplace for specialty food shops and market stands that vary by season and day of the week.
      • Hand-selected venue stops: On any given day, you may visit Scotland’s oldest deli and wine merchant, an indie coffee roaster known for their luscious beans, a maker of fresh game pies, an award-winning seafood smokehouse, or untold others. This city's food offerings are evolving as you read this.
      • Sampling encouraged: You'll taste an array of palate-pleasing edibles as you chat up shop owners proud of their wares – and gather insider tips and explanations that will simplify your menu decoding during the rest of your E'burgh stay.

      Meeting point

Please meet your docent in front of Valvona & Crolla at 19 Elm Row, Edinburgh EH7 4AA. Please note this is a small street parallel to Leith walk.

In these cases we will seek to re-organize the walk to accommodate the change; however, our responsibility in these cases is limited and we cannot be held liable for circumstances beyond our control.

No, no, a thousand times no. It ain't true. Edinburgh is not the capital city of a nation of whiskey-quaffing haggis-eaters who often top off dinner with a deep-fried Mars bar. That stuff's all a bunch of myth and misinformation that this tour will quickly put where it belongs – in what locals here call the dustbin.

Fact is, if you're a food lover/adventurer, the state of the menu in Scotland will likely come as a welcome surprise and delight. Sure, some dishes in the once-classic Scot diet were influenced by poverty with a dash of bumpkin on the side, but that was so "back then."

But this is now, and Edinburgh and its surrounds are fast becoming a center of fine dining and distinctively Scottish cuisine trends. Key aspects of the gastronomy are still traditional – like the routine inclusion of fresh wild game on the bill of fare (a nod to the wooded estate-owners' considerable estates). Yet much of what is being eaten here today is as cosmopolitan as you'd find in any other international capital.

Of course, the proud Scots have nearly always added something of a unique twist to it. Your cobbled walk through the streets of Stockbridge will bring you face to face, and taste to taste, with this – as you encounter some of the latest comestibles being crafted, concocted, fished, raised, smoked, aged, brewed, grown, and embellished in a town that's been cranking out royal meals for well over a thousand years.

Choose your date and time very carefully. Only a portion of this tour is refundable from the time of booking; within 72 hours of operation, it is fully non-refundable.
