      • Get a proper introduction: This is a smart way to be intro'd to the historic – and occasionally creepy – heart of Edinburgh. You'll learn the difference between a close and a wynd, who was beheaded where, how tenements were born, and much more.
      • More than a guide: Even by GoBe standards, your tour leader is special. Known as a "docent" (from the Latin for teacher), this Ph.D. and M.A.-level scholar-guide will make the difference between seeing this lively city and understanding it.
      • Your group, your tour: This private experience lets you choose the departure time and customize a walk that's in step with your passions. You set the pace that works for the group, and even the length of the tour (usually about three hours) is flexible.
      • Walk the Royal Mile: From the foreboding ramparts of Edinburgh Castle to the genteel grandeur of Holyrood Palace (the official home of the Queen in Scotland), this hilly artery formed the populous heart of Old Town – where a crowded, crazy mix of all classes of people cohabitated in very close quarters.
      • Famous and infamous landmarks: The eccentrically modern new Scottish Parliament Building. Ancient Canongate Kirk (church), St. Giles Cathedral and Greyfriars Kirkyard. The Grassmarket, Candlemaker Row, Gladstone's Land, the John Knox House and crusty Canongate Tolbooth which looks like a first cousin of Hogwarts.
      • And too many other to list; this route is swimming in notable sights.

      Meeting point

Your docent will meet you at the entrance of the National Museum of Scotland - under the tower on the corner of Chambers Street (open from 10am).

      Helpful hints

The docent who leads a given walk may become unavailable at the last minute due to illness or other unforeseen circumstance. In the interest of honesty, we should state this upfront: The Royal Mile is a bit longer than a mile. It's based on the "Scots mile" – a unit of measure retired so long ago few people know how long one was.

But your incredibly well-informed docent probably does. Because they know just about everything there is to know about the route you'll be walking on this tour.

Like how the nobles’ houses were clustered near the king's place, and their delightful secret gardens remain in courtyards hidden by the jumble of tenements fronting the street.

They know where the old breweries and sugar houses were. And how to paint a picture of Old Town's industrial pressures and overcrowded "highrise" slum buildings that eventually led to swank, Georgian-style New Town being developed for those who could afford to escape the crush.

And of course they're up to speed on how James VII, William of Orange, Mary Queen of Scots, Bonnie Prince Charlie, and a who's who of other bluebloods made the Royal Mile so royal. And keep it so to this day.

They know all about how the medieval Flodden Wall once kept Edinburghers in and invaders out, while the fortified Netherbow Port guarded the Mile – and provided a showy spot for displaying the heads of traitors on pikes.

Best of all, they know how to bring all these stories and more to vivid, fascinating life. Just hope they don't also know how to bring the acrid aroma of tenement life to life.

That would be too much realism for even the most interested visitor.

Choose your date and time very carefully. Only a portion of this tour is refundable from the time of booking; within 72 hours of operation, it is fully non-refundable.
