Viking Tales: A Self-Guided Audio Tour of Lerwick

      Lerwick, Scotland
From (USD) $20 Per Audio Guide
      • "Up Helly Aa": The Scandinavian influence on the Shetland Islands goes back 12 centuries, and lives in the names of people, places, geographical features, and in music and lingo. But it burns brightest every January at the Up Helly Aa festival, when hundreds of torch-bearing "Vikings" in full regalia march through town and set fire to a hand-built longboat. You don't have to be at the festival to appreciate it; between mid-May and mid-September, visit the Up Helly Aa Exhibition at the Galley Shed, which documents the festival from start to flaming finish.
      • Shetland Museum: Lerwick's most-visited attraction gives more insight into the Shetlands' Viking/Nordic/British heritage, with interactive exhibits, boatbuilding displays, and more than 3,000 artifacts.
      • Town Hall: Built in the flush herring boom days of the 1880s, this handsome stone structure tells Lerwick's story visually, in stained glass chapters. The Hamburg Window is particularly interesting.
      • Fort Charlotte: Built in 1781 over earlier fortifications from a century earlier, this five-sided citadel still guards Bressay Sound with bristling cannons. The same views that made it a strategic defensive location make it ideal for photos of the harbor and its distinctive lodberries – flat rocks used as cargo piers.
      • More to do: See the mysterious Clickhimin Broch, a large, tower-like stone structure that goes back to the Bronze Age; enjoy a seaside walk on "the Knab"; browse the shops of Commercial Street; visit the historic Tolbooth building at the harbor, where customs were collected.
      • Easy and inexpensive: Your confirmation email includes a one-time download link for an audio tour and corresponding numbered map. Just put on your headphones and hit play – each attraction is a separate track, so you set the pace.
