      About This Piran Tour

As your guide leads you through the heart of Ljubljana, you may notice that its cobblestone streets are scored with lines radiating in every direction. That suits Ljubljana: Like the hub of a multi-spoked wheel, this city is where a wealth of diverse cultural influences converge, bringing together the Slavic and the Hellenic, the modern and the medieval, the Gothic and the Baroque.

Even the bridge connecting Old Town to the modern city center is three in one. It branches off into two footbridges lined with elegantly detailed handrails. At the famous Robba Fountain you'll see a stark Gothic obelisk flanked by ornate Baroque sculptures of river gods bearing jugs of fresh water.

But this ancient city, with archeological remains going back 3,000 years, may reveal itself best as you glide by its leafy riverbanks. Buildings of pink, peach, orange, and yellow have stood there since medieval times, gargoyles keeping watch under green copper roofs. Businesspeople press past artists lounging in riverside coffee spots. It's all very relaxed, yet purposeful: a city that radiates charm from the inside out.

      Butchers and bridges

At least three of the city's bridges can claim an unholy association with local butchers. The "new" Butchers' Bridge is a modern structure decorated by lovers' padlocks, symbolizing declarations of eternal love. The old Butchers' Bridge is now called the Dragon Bridge. Cobbler's Bridge once had a butcher shop on it, but the stench so offended a visiting emperor that it was permanently relocated.
