About This Barcelona Tour
Barcelona may take immense pride in famed architect Anotni Gaudi today, but he wasn't always the darling of the city. Gaudi was a highly polarizing figure who divided the people into those who thought he was a genius, and those who thought he was a madman.
It didn't help that George Orwell called Gaudi's most famous creation, the basilica of the Sagrada Familia, "one of the most hideous buildings in the world."
But beauty is in the eye of the beholder. And while some find the church much too over-designed on the outside, they generally become fans upon seeing the inside. The hues of blue, green, yellow, and red that come through the stained glass windows add a touch of magic to the captivating statues and columns that twist up to the ceiling.
Gaudi called his masterpiece a "cathedral for the poor," and perhaps that heart-felt dedication shone blessing on the project. In 1936, ten years after Gaudi's death, revolutionaries from the Spanish Civil War destroyed Gaudi's original plans, drawings, and plaster models.
It took 16 years to piece the master model back together. And in true Gaudi fashion, it reactivated discord in Barcelona. With some insisting that finishing the project was foolish, while others claiming it was inspired.
Luckily, inspiration won.
Knowing his place
Gaudi was a devoted Catholic who believed that Sagrada Familia should tell the story of the Church. His original design calls for 18 spires, representing the Twelve Apostles, the Virgin Mary, the four Evangelists, and Jesus Christ in ascending order of height. The spire of Jesus, crowned by a cross, is the tallest at 570 feet. And yet it's one meter (3.281 feet) shorter than Montjuïc hill in Barcelona. Because as Gaudi said, his creation should not be higher than God's.
Please meet your guide in front of a cafe called Insolita Gea, across the street from the main entrance to the Hospital de Sant Pau. The cafe's address is Sant Antoni Maria Claret 216-220, almost at the intersection with Carrer de Cartagena.
Purchase your entry tickets for Sagrada Familia during checkout - one per person - and skip the line. Your guide will have your entry tickets to the Sagrada Familia. You are responsible for purchasing Hospital de Sant Pau tickets on site (your guide can help with this).
