You would think that having a decadent palace all your own would have been enough for the sultans in the Alhambra. But even royalty needed a place to enjoy nature and chill out. And the Moors closely aligned the idea of their heaven with gardens. So they built their own little bit of heaven by the Sierra Mountains, a veritable Eden on Earth. Welcome to Generalife Gardens, part of the Alhambra complex that you'll get to enjoy on this GoBe tour.

Generalife dates back to the early 1300s and the reign of Muhammad III. When construction began, the south part served as a grazing area for livestock, and a spot for sultans to hunt. Four vegetable gardens fed people in the nearby Alhambra buildings. Cypress trees added luscious greenery. Many flowers gave royalty some beautiful things to look at while relaxing. Awaken your senses to the green grandeur of the gardens during a relaxed stroll of the grounds.

Discover distinctive water features, exotic plants, and decadent flowers. Listen as your guide provides captivating context. Notice the Stairway of the Lions, the way to enter the high gardens. The Water Stairway will get you to the highest point in the gardens, with epic views all around. In the Court of the Main Canal, a set of crossing fountain jets will capture your attention. They get water from the Royal Canal, the main source of water for the complex. These fountains first spouted in the 19th century; they are still a sight, and sound, to behold. With any luck, once you depart, you'll be able to channel your inner sultan just by remembering this exciting excursion.

      Rivals and revenge

The Hall of the Abencerrajes, part of this GoBe tour, was the site of a legendary massacre. The Abencerrajes, a 16th-century Moorish family of knights, feuded with the rival Zegris family. So the Zegrises told the king that a family member was sleeping with his wife. Without confirming the news, he allegedly had them kill 36 Abencerrajes at a banquet. The fountain supposedly still has their bloodstains. And people think Game of Thrones is violent.
