      About this Lake Como tour

Ah, star-crossed love! Italy's literary classic, The Betrothed (I Promessi Sposi) by Alessandro Manzoni, is set in the lovely city of Lecco. You'll hear about the story's main characters (unlucky lovers, Renzo and Lucia), as you follow your guide on an engaging, sensory stroll through this non-touristy destination. You'll fall in love with the sights, smells, and flavors as you wander the nooks and crannies of this fairytale setting.

Lucky you, punctuating your tour will be stops to sample Lecco's cuisine, a trifecta of local culinary styles flavored by its magnificent geography of lake, mountains, and valley. Your guide will introduce you to local purveyors, many family-run, where you'll rub shoulders with Italians shopping for their dinners. Whilst your feet take a rest, your taste buds will go into overdrive, as you nibble waver-thin slices of prosciutto, bresaola, and mortadella, served with fresh-baked focaccia, and bite into fish from Lake Como.

Cheese devotees won't want to miss a tasting of Taleggio, a creamy, mild cheese with a pungent aroma, and Casera, a soft, strong, blue-veined cheese. You can even try the local stinky cheese, but don't say we didn't warn you! And, if the stars are in alignment, you'll sample the polpetta called Mondeghilo (translation: deep-fried mini meatball). Yum!

      This is no baloney

The Italians are the Michelangelo of meat, transforming the most humble cuts into sublime charcuterie. Don't miss the prosciutto, made from the leg of the pig, dry cured and served uncooked (crudo) or cooked (cotto). Another to try: bresaola, one of the few cured meats made from beef. It is super lean, salted, spiced, and air-dried with a rich red color. And then there's mortadella, Italy's "bologna-style" cured meat. Smooth, flavorful, and studded with lard and sometimes pistachios, mortadella is not your kid's baloney.
