About This Madrid Tour
With an unsurpassed collection of over 21,000 pieces, the Reina Sofia Museum is buzzing with the energy of the avant-garde movement. In the company of an art-smart guide, you gain insights into Spain and the art world at the turn of the 20th-century. You understand the role of Spanish artists, examining the work of Picasso and Juan Gris in relation to Cubism and considering Dali and Miro's contributions to Surrealism.
Picasso's haunting masterpiece Guernica, the museum's centerpiece, boldly reflects the artist's response to the bombing of a small Basque town during the Spanish Civil War. Marvel at this monumental mural as your docent reveals how Picasso was inspired to create it, the meaning of its symbolism, and how it became an allegory for the horrors of war.
The tour continues to the post-war period (both the Civil War and WWII) to explore the increasing prominence of American art and how the years of Franco dictatorship influenced Spanish artists. We also view modern works to understand how Spanish art has evolved across the second half of the 20th-century and continues to inspire to the present day
Picasso's refugee masterpiece
For four decades, New York's Museum of Modern Art was home for the powerful and massive Guernica (11 feet tall and 25 ½ feet wide). Picasso had loaned it to MoMA in 1939 with instructions that it not be returned to Spain until democracy was restored in his homeland. It eventually returned in 1981 to celebrate Spain's democracy. Unfortunately. Picasso did not witness this event. He died at age 91 in 1973.
Please meet your guide in front of the entrance to the Starbucks at Calle Dr. Drumen, 4. This Starbucks is in front of the main entrance to the museum (with your back to the museum, it is to the right).
