      About this Malaga tour

It's been in Malaga for 1,300 years, but the Gibralfaro Castle doesn't quite fit in.

In a stark contrast from the chilled-out, seaside vibe of Spain's sixth-largest city, Gibralfaro's faded brick towers and walls loom ominously over the town, as if still expecting foreign invaders to arrive any minute.

It's one of many interesting contrasts in Malaga. Just a short walk away from the castle is the Malagueta bullring, a grand 14,000-seat arena that has hosted bullfights for more than 100 years. Architect Joaquin Rucoba designed it to combine the unique aspects of Spanish design with Moorish influences, which are clearly seen in the many arches and pillars of the building's exterior.

Overall, Malaga has a sunny disposition: Malagueta Beach winds along the city's coast for several miles, and offers some of the liveliest cafes and bars in the city. But when you take a deeper look at the Picasso Museum (he was born here), the relaxing botanical garden, or the towering Renaissance majesty of the city cathedral you'll realize that fun in the sun is only the beginning.

      A quick study

The most famous Malagan of all was a classic child prodigy. Picasso completed the entrance exam for the Barcelona School of Fine Arts in a single day at the age of 13. This exam was normally reserved for university-age students, who were allowed a full month to complete it. You can see the first large painting he finished there, First Communion, at the Picasso Museum.
