Stockholm Self-Guided Audio Tour
- Old Town: Cutting-edge Stockholm has been meticulous about preserving Gamla Stan. This is where the city was founded in 1252, and the narrow cobbled lanes reveal a time capsule of historic landmarks, all centered around Stortoget: "The Big Square."
- Stortoget: It's not physically large; it's what surrounds this square that makes it significant, including the Nobel Museum in the old Stock Exchange (the Prize is awarded in Stockholm every year), and the iconic brick Gothic cathedral known as the Great Church or Stockholm Cathedral. (See the famous St. George sculpture inside.) Visit the museums and elegant reception rooms of the handsomely Baroque Royal Palace, since 1754 an official residence of the Swedish monarch.
- Gustav Adolfs Torg: Cross the bridge north of the palace to the small islet where Sweden's Parliament convenes. The Museum of Medieval Stockholm is right next to it. Keep going to the square (torg) – that commanding figure on horseback in the center is King Gustavus Adolphus, the 17th-century ruler who made Sweden a military power. He's surrounded by the imposing Opera House, the grand palace of an 18th-century princess (now headquarters of the Foreign Ministry), and a museum of ancient Greek and Roman antiquities. Over the bridge to the west is yet another monumental landmark – City Hall.
