About this Basel Tour
The art capital of Basel is like an open-air gallery with surprises at every turn. Story-telling buildings. An inspiring heritage. Vivid cityscapes. Plus river views and a few quirky sights. Go with GoBe and cover it all in a couple of hours.
Revel in the spirit of Old Town, where busy cafes and crisscrossing trams energize historic Barfusserplatz, the main square. In the center of it all is the striking, blood-red Rathaus (town hall), perhaps Switzerland's finest. It was proudly erected in 1501, when the guilds of Basel joined the Swiss federation. Centuries later, this bright and intricately tiled building stands like an exclamation mark over the marketplace.
Modern architecture makes bold statements too. Basel has the highest concentration of museums (not just in Switzerland, but in all of Europe) and many are designed by the rock stars of architecture, like Frank O. Gehry, Mario Botta, Renzo Piano, and Herzog & de Meuron. Get an eyeful of these buildings and you'll see why this city has the brio to host Art Basel, the premier gathering for the international art world. It's done it in style since 1970.
But Bebbies (as locals are known) don't take their art too seriously. Catch its zanier side at the Tinguely Museum's eccentric fountain, where Swiss artist (and Basel native) Jean Tinguely's mechanical sculptures seem to playfully connect with the water, each other, and you. Experiencing it, you're drawn into the magical interaction between art and people…an amazing microcosm of the city itself.
The rude king of Basel
The Rhine divides the city into "Greater Basel" and "Lesser Basel," and there's been rivalry between them for centuries. Evidence of this is Greater Basel's Lallekonig, the "tongue king" figure that sticks out his tongue to the Lesser side. The Lesser returns the taunt during the annual carnival, when costumed characters dance on the bridge. With backs and wagging bottoms turned to the king, the dancers make their message clear.
