About this Lausanne Tour
Quelle surprise! Placed in a postcard-perfect setting, this Swiss destination is considered by many the crown jewel of Lake Geneva. Founded on three hills, bounded by renowned vineyard-encrusted slopes and fronting the soaring Savoy Alps on the stunning French shoreline, Lausanne emerges. Saturated in history, but with crystalline visions for the future this city positively sparkles.
Hear more about what makes timeless Old Town tick, courtesy of your well-informed GoBe guide. Place de la Palud remains Lausanne’s oldest town square, a treasure where crowds have gathered to mingle and market together since the 9th century. For the last 500 years or so, it’s hosted local government too, now in the Hotel de Ville (Town Hall). Tip a nod to Justice, gripping his iconic scales, who rules from an eye-catching fountain.
You can’t miss the majestic Cathedral of Lausanne, sometimes referred to as the Cathedral of Notre Dame. Literally. Standing proudly over the city, this fine example of a Gothic church represents the spiritual capital of French-speaking Switzerland. Nearby, the Church of Saint Francis was once an illustrious monastery complex and is still a serene place to pray in a bustling backdrop.
Catch a closer glimpse of Chateau Saint-Maire, a fabulous castle classified as a heritage site of national significance. It acted as the residence for city bishops until 1536, when Bern captured and secularized Lausanne, and the bishop at that time escaped through a hidden stairwell. Today, it serves as the seat of the cantonal government. With GoBe, every facet of the past that dazzles is right at your fingertips. All you have to do? Ask!
More reliable than a Rolex
Since 1405, with hardly an interruption, the Cathedral has kept a lookout posted in the bell tower. From 10 p.m. to 2 a.m., 365 days a year, he shouts the hours to the four cardinal directions. He’s the modern-day survivor of the night watch tradition, meant to warn the town of any fires on the horizon. This enigmatic civil servant enables folks to rest easy, calling, “C’est le guet; il a sonne dix,” or “This is the nightwatch; the hour has struck.”
