About this Zermatt
Tiny, yet mighty. Utterly spellbinding. Nestled at the base of the mythical Matterhorn, at the southern end of a Rhone River valley, Zermatt lies almost totally surrounded by Switzerland’s highest alpine peaks and in the midst of a colossal skiing region. Hordes of national ski teams train here, in the snowy region laced with 54 mountain railways and lifts, and fittingly nicknamed “Matterhorn Glacier Paradise.”
Naturally, as the height of sporting adventure, the town attracts packs of international holidaymakers. Although only 5,770 people reside here year-round, the population can swell to several times this size with vacationers. Zermatt has clearly trained for it all, declaring eco-friendliness top priority to protect its treasures, and winning numerous awards for its sustainability efforts.
Because the streets are car-free, with just a few electric, whisper-quiet vehicles, your tour will be especially relaxed and refreshing. Stroll the delightful Bahnhofstrasse, lined with alluring bakeries, cake and chocolate shops, restaurants, and boutiques. In summer, this is the twice-daily route of Zermatt’s secret stars, a herd of 50 or so Valais Blackneck goats, strikingly photogenic with their long, black-and-white coats and twisted horns.
Amble the narrow alleys of Old Village. This Hinterdorf, or “rear village,” features over 30 homes, barns, and stores dating as far back as the 1500s, revealing how the mountain farmers once lived. (Ask your GoBe guide why many are curiously balanced on stilts.) Whether from St. Mauritius’ steps, the Kirchbrucke (church bridge), or the mountaineers’ cemetery, though, the Matterhorn never stops weaving its magic, or spilling secrets of its own.
Trailblazing at a glacial pace
With a pyramidal peak 14,692 feet high, the Matterhorn is one of Europe’s tallest…and an irresistible temptation for mountaineers throughout history. Its summit once became the goal of global competition. Still, the fearsome “Mountain of Mountains” remained among the last in the Alps to be conquered. Finally, in 1865, Edward Whymper led a party to the top, and bold climbers like Teddy Roosevelt have returned to scale it since.
