      About this Ephesus (Kusadasi) tour

If you like to go your own way, modern technology is your ticket to ancient Ephesus. It's a great way to imagine what it would have been like to live in one of the capitals of the ancient world.

The Fountain of Trajan honors one of Rome's great emperors with a statue of him overlooking a large pool. Trajan's right foot rested on a sphere, symbolizing his rule over the world – and leading historians to believe Romans knew the world's true shape way back in the 1st century.

At the Scholastic Baths, you'll see a line of stone latrines built against a wall. The original partitions were simply armrests, so privacy apparently wasn't a big deal for the ancients. But the rich and Roman still liked their comforts; it's said they had servants sit on the stone toilet to warm it before they took their seat.

Hercules Gate, depicting Hercules wearing lion skins to represent his first labor (killing a lion with an impenetrable coat), was an early traffic-calming structure to keep wagons from entering the street. It worked – check out the much smoother street beyond it.

The purpose of the brothel where Marble Road meets Curates Street was made abundantly clear by a statue with an enormous phallus found inside. (The well-endowed fellow is now in the Ephesus Museum.)

The Great Theater illustrates an archeological rule of thumb. Archeologists simply multiply theater capacity (25,000) by ten to guesstimate Ephesus' peak population of 250,000. Archeologists also estimate that for every week they excavate, they'll spend up to five weeks conserving and cataloging their finds. That leads you to GoBe's rule of thumb for iPod tours – for every hour you explore, you'll make countless great finds.

       Oldest ad, oldest profession

Opposite the Library of Celsus, you can see an advertisement for an Ephesus brothel carved into one of the marble paving stones. It shows a left foot leading the way, a cross, a heart, a woman's face, and coins – a pictograph that says "turn left at the intersection where the affection of a woman can be bought for money." A secret tunnel connected the library to the brothel, a handy way to disguise illicit visits as a love of reading.
