Private Topkapi Palace Tour with Ottoman Scholar
- Tour anchor: The Topkapi Palace, once the beating heart of the Ottoman Empire, is also the heart of this special private tour. For more than 400 years, it was the primary home of reigning Sultans and their courts.
- Personalized Tour focus: Depending on your docent’s area of expertise and your particular interests, the focus could tend toward architecture and symbolism, Ottoman political history, the daily life (and machinations!) of the court, and/or a number of topic options.
- Palace origin: Sultan Mehmed II, conqueror of Constantinople, ordered construction of Topkapi (“Cannon Gate”) Palace in 1459, choosing its site and layout himself. The high walls of the complex incorporate sections from the original Byzantine acropolis.
- Palace features: Virtually endless, the list includes the cloak and sword of Mohammed, Imperial carriages and treasures, 1,300 years of Islamic weaponry, and unrivaled collections of Ottoman miniatures, exquisite jewelry, thrones, rare Chinese porcelain and celadon, murals, kitchen utensils, and Iznik tiles.
Please meet your guide on the sidewalk in front of the Med Cezir Hotel, which is located directly across the street from the Four Seasons Hotel in Sultanahmet (the historic center). The exact address is Tevkifhane Sok. No 6.
There are entrance fees you must pay at the door: Topkapi museum is 20 TL, (~about $12.50) , Entrance to the Harem is 15 TL . Topkapi Palace entrance is free for children at 0-12 years old and the Harem is free for children 0-6, with a valid ID.
As in many cities, keep your wallet or purse secured and leave the bling behind. In need of retail therapy after your tour? Your guide can advise you where to go in search of that "must have" souvenir to take home. Be sure to have some local currency and a backpack for all your great buys.
