Go inside the tombs and view the 16th-century floral designs that stand out in vibrant colors. Get up close and observe the garbs worn by the sultans.

Hagia Sophia: A Church, Mosque and Museum

Hagia Sophia is a historical museum in Istanbul; however, the site was not built to be a museum. In the past, the monument has been both a church and a mosque, at different times. The name Hagia Sophia translates to the “Shrine of the Holy God.” The temple was dedicated to Logos (Jesus Christ) by the Christian community that built it. When the Ottoman sultans conquered Turkey, many cathedrals were converted into mosques. Hagia Sophia was one of these. The temple’s Christian mosaics and frescoes were plastered over when it was converted into a mosque. The magnificent design of the Hagia Sophia also inspired other monuments, such as the Sultan Ahmed Mosque and the Blue Mosque.
