About this Kiev Tour
With better-known landmarks like St. Sophia's Cathedral and the Kiev Monastery of the Caves, the Cathedral of St. Vladimir sometimes gets second billing. But with its beautiful interior, it belongs at the top of the list.
The splendor is evident even before you set foot inside. The entrance features impressive bronze relief sculptures of St. Olga – former Princess Olga of Kiev in the 10th century – set against a blue background.
Inside, under its seven domes, this brightly lit Byzantine cathedral is dressed with unique frescos and mosaics depicting scenes of salvation and Russian Orthodox Christian history.
The most notable work is the Holy Mother of God fresco on the apse of the altar. The work, created by Russian master Viktor Vasnetsov in the 1880s, is considered a masterpiece of fine art around the world. Famous for its three-dimensional perspective, it offers amazingly realistic detail and a unique sense of movement in the wind-blown clothing, the flying angels, and the child's open arms.
The walls and the floors of St. Vladimir are decorated with multicolored marbles from Italy, Spain, France, and Belgium. And the iconostasis is carved from beautiful white Carrara marble.
In a city with as rich a religious heritage as Kiev, the Cathedral of St. Vladimir may not be the first one that gets mentioned. But once you see this little-known gem, it could be the one you can't stop talking about.
Anticipating the Nazi takeover of Kiev in World War II, the Red Army hid explosives throughout the city. Among the places they booby-trapped was the Holy Dormition Cathedral. The explosion destroyed all but about one fourth of the cathedral. It was restored to its former glory based on pictures and historical records, many of its original icons and mosaics were lost forever.
