About this Kiev Tour
In just three hours, this private tour will make you an expert on the city of Kiev. Not just because you'll see so much of it but because your guide will share insights and information only the locals know.
As you ride around in a vintage car, you can hear how the Kiev Monastery of the Caves donated one million bricks to the construction of the beautiful Byzantine-style St. Vladimir's Cathedral, completed in 1882.
And learn why there's a church atop the Golden Gate (originally built in the 11th century, and rebuilt in 1982): because of a promise Prince Yaroslav made to the Virgin Mary in 1017 if she helped him defeat fierce nomads threatening the city.
Perhaps your guide will tell you which of the three legends about the House with Chimeras is true. One says the house's owner/architect, Vladislav Gorodetsky, included all the sea-type monsters because his daughter, spurned by love, committed suicide by drowning herself in the Dnieper River. The second says the adventurous Gorodetsky built the house on such a steep hill to win a bet proving that it could be done.
The third legend claims that, aside from being an architect, Gorodetsky was a sorcerer, and put a magic spell on the house so that only his descendants could live happily there. That would explain why plans to make it the official residence of the Ukrainian president haven't materialized. But the fact that the house is damaged and sliding slowly down the hill might also have something to do with that.
Sorcery or gravity. See what your guide has to say about it.
Not far from the House with Chimeras you'll see another unusual piece of Kiev architecture. It's a long, rectangular, two-story mansion, built in 1901, that features an intricate Italian Renaissance facade. But its most unique aspect is its milk-chocolaty color, earning it the nickname ""Chocolate House""; it's ornately detailed exterior does indeed make it a visual feast.
