About this Eilat tour
Soak up the history of Jerusalem little by little. Begin with a tour of the city's modern districts, then ascend the Mount of Olives for panoramic city views. The Mount, in use as a Jewish cemetery for over 3,000 years, is described as the place from which Jesus ascended to Heaven.
Head to Mount Zion, the highest point in ancient Jerusalem, and visit the Church of the Dormition, where the Virgin Mary "fell into eternal sleep." Visit the Cenacle, the room recognized as the site of The Last Supper. Your breathtaking journey continues with a visit to King David's Tomb, recognized as the burial place of the venerated king who reigned from 1010-970 B.C.
Explore another side of Israel's history with a visit to a diamond workshop. Israel serves as one of the world's three major centers for polished diamonds. See diamonds being cut and have the chance to make some glittering bargain buys. Enjoy a delicious lunch of local cuisine before taking in more of Jerusalem's holy heritage.
In Old City Jerusalem, follow the Via Dolorosa, the path which Jesus walked on the way to his crucifixion, to its end at the Church of the Holy Sepulcher. The church contains the two holiest sites in Christendom: the site where Jesus was crucified, and Jesus' empty tomb, where he is said to have been buried and resurrected.
Journey then to the holiest of Jewish sites, the Western Wall that was built by King Herod in 20 B.C. during his expansion of the Temple, which was destroyed by the Romans in 70 A.D. Beginning in the 16th century, the wall became the chief place of pilgrimage for the Jewish people, where they came to lament the destruction of their Temple. On your return ride, you're sure to be singing the praises of the Holy City.
Talk about ancient history!
In 1962, dinosaur tracks were discovered in the garden of one of the residents of Beit Zayit, a community on the outskirts of Jerusalem. The footprints are thought to have belonged to a Struthiomimus, an ostrich-like dinosaur, and are now on display at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem. Beit Zayit is the only place in Israel where evidence of dinosaurs was discovered, and one of few such sites in the Middle East.
