About this Haifa tour
Leaving Haifa port, you'll settle in for a comfortable drive along the lush Mediterranean coastline to your destination, Caesarea National Park. King Herod, who was gifted the city of Caesarea from Roman Emperor Augustus Caesar, built a massive port there alongside entertainment facilities, bathhouses, and temples. You'll start your journey into the past at the Visitor Center, where you'll have the chance to meet virtual figures from the past and ask them questions after hearing their stories.
Thanks to archaeological excavations in the 1950s and 1960s that uncovered a trove of archaeological remains, you'll walk through history with your expert guide. The park houses architectural remains from the Hellenistic period (3rd century B.C.) through the Crusader period (12th century A.D.), when Caesarea was a port city and spent many years as Israel's capital; these include a complex of Crusader fortifications and a Roman amphitheater. The inside of the theater is not only impressive as a remnant of the glory days of Rome, but for its spectacular view of the Mediterranean.
Continue your walk along the city walls and around the towers, wander through the ruins of the castle and the various temples, watch horse races in the hippodrome, and visit the ancient port and the tiny artists' square. And, don't miss the double aqueduct that brought water from springs at the foot of Mount Carmel and the 200-foot-wide moat protecting the harbor. On your drive back to Haifa, you'll be treated to a panoramic view of Haifa Bay and the magnificent hanging gardens at Baha'i before returning to your ship.
What's in a name?
Inside Caesarea National Park is a plaque with a replica of an original inscription, discovered during an archaeological excavation in the mid-20th century. It serves as the only known archaeological evidence of the existence of Pontius Pilate, the governor of Judea at the time of Jesus. The original inscription is housed at the Israel Museum in Jerusalem.
