About this Haifa tour
Soak up the thrilling sites surrounding Israel's third-largest city, Haifa. Your comfortable bus tour will guide you through Mount Carmel, a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, seeing the Stella Maris Carmelite Monetary, the headquarters of the Roman Catholic Carmelite Order, and Panorama Avenue, named for its expansive views of Haifa Bay, the Mediterranean coastline, and all of northern Israel. Stop to view the Baha'i World Center, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and take in its sumptuous hanging gardens, the largest in the world, and the spectacular view from the upper terrace.
Continue your drive down Mount Carmel, leaving Haifa and crossing the bay to Acre, the oldest city in Israel's northern region. More than 4,000 years of recorded history will unfold before your eyes as you walk through Acre's narrow cobblestone passageways and colorful bazaar. The present-day town was built in the 18th century on the ruins of the 12th-century Crusader city. Visit the Crusaders Fortress, built by the Knights Hospitaller and the subterranean Crusader city; then walk past Al-Jazzar Mosque and the Khan el-Umdan, a handsome 18th-century caravanserai (roadside inn).
Then, descend back to the 12th century to visit the unforgettable Templars' Tunnel. This amazing engineering feat is more than a thousand feet long and carved through solid stone. As its name suggests, the tunnel was constructed by the Knights Templar, the Crusaders charged with guarding the temple in Jerusalem. The tunnel will lead you to the lighthouse and the sea wall. After a morning of adventure, you will have some time to shop in the bazaar; then, return to Haifa and your ship.
Level with me
Haifa is a city on the rise, built on three levels: Downtown, which comprises the old city, port, and coast; Hadar HaCarmel, the middle city; and Carmel/Ahuza, the upper city. The change of altitude over such a short distance is emphasized by the only subway in Israel, the Carmelit, which travels from downtown to the upper city in only six minutes!
